Students in the Jamesville-DeWitt High School Spanish Honor Society recently raised more than $1,300 for The Pulsera Project, a fair-trade, nonprofit organization that helps Central American artisans. Society members sold hundreds of handmade bracelets and purses made by artists in Guatemala and Nicaragua. Each bracelet included the signature of the person who made it.

The Pulsera Project connects with schools around the country in order to empower artists in Latin America and invest in their communities. Through this service project, J-DHS students not only enjoyed seeing the beautiful handicrafts but also gained a better understanding and appreciation for the work that goes into making them and the importance of supporting such global causes.

“I personally connected with this project because I know how much even a little bit of money can mean to people in non-first world countries,” said senior Anushka Joardar. “Personally, I’ve seen poverty in India, so I’m really glad that I got to help out these artisans in Nicaragua and Guatemala.”

Joardar sold more than 100 bracelets alone!
