The team, led by technology teachers Philip Kinane and Keith Bryant, competed against 23 teams representing 10 area districts on Saturday, Jan. 11.

Students were challenged to build and program Lego robots to accomplish “missions” across a large board that featured the underwater theme, “Submerged.”

The J-DMS ROM team spent a lot of time preparing for the competition. They met at least twice per week before the school day and worked hard for several months to design, build, program, and test their robot.

Students also presented “Innovation Projects” to a panel of judges about their ideas for preserving underwater resources.

“The innovation project they researched was designed to identify deep sea plastic waste. As a potential solution to the problem, the team designed and built an underwater drone prototype from existing materials from the J-DMS tech classrooms,” shared Kinane.

The teams were evaluated in four areas: Core Values, Innovation Project, Robot Design and Robot Game. The J-DMS ROM team was presented with a Robot Performance Award.
