The Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District is among six local school districts that will receive school bus stop-arm cameras at no cost to the district. It’s part of a pilot program approved by Onondaga County lawmakers to catch and fine drivers who pass buses while they are stopped with lights flashing.
Verra Mobility, a private company contracted by the county, will install and monitor the cameras at no charge. The company will keep 55% of the fines it collects, and the county will get the rest.
“We’re thankful for this opportunity to work with the county and increase transportation safety for our students, staff, and the community. Hopefully with the appropriate notification and understanding of the community that these cameras are in place we will see a reduction in unsafe driving,” said Superintendent Peter Smith.
The cameras are expected to be in place for the 2025-26 school year.
