The Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District is proud to share that we had two teams place in the CNY Science & Engineering Fair Junior Division. It was held at the Museum of Science and Technology on Sunday, April 7.
The annual student science and engineering fair is open to students in grades 4-8 (Junior Division) and 9-12 (Senior Division). Individually or with a partner, students design, execute and present their science projects to judges for a chance at dozens of merit awards, prizes, scholarships, and qualifying status for the International Science & Engineering Fair.
Jamesville Elementary School fourth-graders Emma Button and Siobhan Yung won the LeMoyne College Excellence in Mathematics and Computer Science Award for their project, “Fraction Rangers: A Fraction Learning Game for All.”
The “Fraction Rangers” project features an educational board game aimed at making learning fractions engaging and accessible for elementary students of diverse backgrounds. It highlights the game’s emphasis on collaborative learning through adventure, employing characters with unique powers to navigate mathematical challenges, and promoting educational equity by offering both purchasable and free downloadable versions.
Jamesville-DeWitt Middle School seventh-graders Om Vaidya, Simran Sanders, and Akul Pawar won three awards for their magnetic accelerator model. It can be used for rocket launches, airplane takeoffs, and trains. Their project explained that most fuel consumption happens during acceleration and using a magnetic accelerator can significantly reduce fuel consumption. The students presented their hypothesis, experiment, and data using a statistical model.
Om, Simran, and Akul won two first place awards from IEEE and Lockheed Martin in the category of Engineering, Technology, Applications and Data Analysis. They also received high honors out of 150 projects presented at the CNYSEF.
Congratulations to these hard working teams, we’re so proud of your accomplishments!
