J-D Middle School students release Atlantic Salmon raised in class

Some J-D Middle School students in grades 6 and 7 got a unique opportunity in science class this year. They were able to raise Atlantic Salmon from eggs received through OCM BOCES. Science Teacher Anna Endreny got the eggs back in January. Over the past several months, students were able to observe the eggs as they developed through different life stages and complete a number of related learning activities.

“Once the salmon could no longer rely on their eggs for nutrition, they needed to be released into the wild,” explained Endreny.

J-D Middle Schools crouch by stream to release Atlantic Salmon fish they raised in class with small cups.

The students were taken to Fiddlers Green Park in Jamesville to release their fish on Thursday, April 3.

“Raising and releasing the salmon helps the local stream ecosystems because Atlantic Salmon are a native species which have declined due to pollution and the invasive non-native brown trout,” shared Endreny.

The students wrapped up their field trip by exploring Fiddlers Green walking trails.
