School opening update

On Aug. 13, Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District Superintendent Peter Smith sent the following letter via SchoolMessenger to J-D families and staff.

Good afternoon,

Yesterday, the State Education Department released guidance for school districts to consider when planning for back-to-school next month. We’re reviewing this Health & Safety Guide, alongside the guidance we have received from the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics, to finalize our back-to-school opening plan, which will be presented to the community at our next board of education meeting on Monday, Aug. 23 and will be available on the district website on Tuesday, Aug. 24.

Our reopening plan will be guided by the following principles:

  • The health, safety and well-being of the children and adults is paramount
  • Educational equity will be at the forefront of decision-making
  • Return all students to school, full-time
  • Support students’ social, emotional and mental health
  • Prioritize the needs of our most vulnerable students
  • Communicate with stakeholders, such as staff, families, students, and the community
  • Ensure flexibility to meet the needs of all students regardless of changing circumstances.

We are committed to a full return to in-person instruction for all grades, every day beginning on September 9. I appreciate your support and understanding as we navigate the challenges of developing a sound plan for back-to-school despite these challenging times.

Sincerely,

Peter Smith
