Schedule changes in response to heat advisory

Dear Jamesville-DeWitt families and staff,

As you know, the weather forecast for the next few days is calling for oppressive temperatures above 95 degrees combined with high humidity and a heat advisory has been issued. Based on the forecast and the fact that most classrooms in our buildings are not air conditioned, students in grades pre-k through grade 8 will have a half day of school on Tuesday and Thursday. The middle school will dismiss at 10:30 a.m. and the elementary schools will dismiss at 11:15 a.m.

PLEASE NOTE: All Final Exams and Regents Exams at the high school will take place as scheduled. We are currently working on shifting exam rooms around so that Regents exams can take place in climate controlled areas of the building, if possible.

Please know that I did not arrive at this decision lightly and recognize the challenges that families face with these schedule changes and that is why I want to get this information to you as soon as possible.

Similar to decisions we make due to inclement weather in the winter, this decision has been made with the interest of the health, safety and welfare of our students and staff.

Individual buildings will communicate with families in regard to any special events impacted by this schedule change.

In addition to the two half-days on Tuesday and Thursday, please remember that on Wednesday, June 19 there is no school in recognition of Juneteenth.

Sincerely,

Peter Smith
Superintendent
