The Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District Board of Education adopted the 2023-24 District Safety Plan during their Monday meeting. The plan will be submitted to the State Education Department within the next 30 days. State Police and the town of DeWitt Police Department will be given the plans to better coordinate response efforts.
District safety plans are designed to prevent or minimize the effects of violent incidents and emergencies. They must be reviewed annually, updated when necessary, and adopted by the school board by September 1. Proposed changes to the 2023-24 plan were shared on the district’s website and through a ParentSquare message in July. Public comments were accepted through August 20.
The district is also working on additional safety and security enhancements through the I.P. Paging and Access Controls Project. It will include the hardening of building exteriors, upgrading the emergency notification system, the addition of lockdown buttons, and interior door access controls. Federal funds will be used to make the changes.
The project follows a comprehensive district-wide security audit which was completed in July. The administration team in partnership with the board of education will prioritize recommendations from the audit to ensure the safety and security of students and staff.
We will continue to provide you with updates as they become available. If you have any questions, please reach out to Superintendent Peter Smith at psmith@jd.cnyric.org.
